Innovative Approach for M&V

Abstract

M&V is important to verify energy savings for utility programs, while constraints such as timelines and budgets can limit option choices. CLEAResult works with a store chain on HVAC control upgrades for approximately 100 stores. This presentation illustrates an innovative approach to close projects on time while achieving high accuracy. Sub-hourly post interval data can be obtained, while only monthly utility bills are available for the baseline. Because stores are occupied 7 days/week, daily interval is used for the analysis to avoid considering operation schedules and obtain enough granularity. The approach is to: 1) understand store characteristics by analyzing baseline and post interval data on 9 pilot stores; 2) develop a baseload: HVAC ratio model in relation to temperature; 3) estimate baseline HVAC load by using utility bills, ratio model, and historical weather; 4) develop post models and calculate post energy by using weather data during the same baseline period; 5) calculate energy savings; 6) compare energy savings for all stores to validate savings consistency. In addition, post trending data is used to validate the ratio model approach. With the innovative approach, energy savings can be quantified accurately with a short post period.
