The Power of Visualizing Trend Data to Optimize Building Performance
Increasing expectations of occupants and higher code requirements regarding energy efficiency and thermal comfort lead to more complex building design strategies and dependency on the building automation system. This is especially true with high-performance buildings, which often struggle during actual operation to meet these standards. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that facility engineers operate these systems while simultaneously addressing day-to-day tenant complaints. Consequently, control sequences are often changed to satisfy occupants’ needs in the short term, which leads to inefficient building operation and even larger issues.
Monitoring-Based Commissioning, or tracking system and energy performance via actual operation data, is therefore vital in ensuring that systems are operating according to the original design intent, while considering actual operating conditions, which frequently differ from previous assumptions. Further, an effective Monitoring-Based Commissioning program identifies root-causes of operational issues, which enables more robust solutions from the start.
Using real-world examples, this presentation shows how Monitoring-Based Commissioning is leveraged to get system operation on track, while also revealing energy-optimizing potential. Correctly applied, this process visualizes even large amounts of data comprehensibly, clearly diagnosing operation, checking dependencies, and generating plain, actionable results. And the process is repeatable, enabling ongoing verification with no impact on building operation.
